ESSR is a company set up by young people who have had mental health issues. They have developed a Dress for Change T-shirt range where 100% of the profits goes to a charity called ‘Livin’ which aims to change the stigma around mental health. This is their website. Wellbeing Australia does not advertise businesses but we are making an exception here – though not setting precedents!
“Hi there!I have a special request for you guys to share our dress for change clothing range. I absolutely love what you guys do, as suicide is such an awful tragedy. My name is Lex, I am 23 and I work in a start-up company called Eat Sleep Spray Repeat (ESSR) with three of my best friends (Lix, Rhys and Tom), we’re currently based in Melbourne. One of the factors that separates us from other typical art companies is our Dress for Change T-shirt range. 100% of profits from the Dress for Change range goes towards mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The charity we support is based in Sydney called ‘Livin.’ Together with Livin we are actively fighting to change the stigma around mental health, raise awareness and prevent suicide by combining their “it aint weak to speak” and our Dress for Change movement. Rhys and Tom, whom are the founders of ESSR, wanted to find some everyday item they could use to help raise awareness, which is why they chose t-shirts. One of our t-shirts has the dress for change logo on the front and a semi-colon on the back. A semicolon is used when an author could have chosen to end their sentence but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life. Both Tom and Rhys also sport a semicolon tattoo behind their ear.
Unfortunately, everyone involved in ESSR has had suicide, mental health issues and depression impact our lives in one way or another; either battling it ourselves, losing best friends and parents to it or simply watching our best friends suffer. This makes these issues very close to all of our hearts, something we’re all deeply passionate about. Our generation and the generations to follow still suffer the aftermath of previous generations suppressing their mental health issues as a result of the stigma surrounding these topics during that period of time. Don’t get me wrong, we have come such a long way but there is still so much more room for improvement.
We have received such positive feedback so far for our efforts to change the stigma however, as our business is only starting up, we really need all the help we can get to push our name out there. Especially as the only income we receive is from the art we sell, so we need a platform to get in front of more people so that we can keep the dress for change range going and hopefully make a difference.
By supporting us, you’re supporting Livin and we are both supporting those in need. I like to think of it as a positive snowball effect, where we all support each other and no one gets left behind. I hope I explained this well enough to catch your interest, sometimes I get so excited discussing what we do, I can make it confusing! I’m hoping you could mention us on your facebook page or website, anything really just to get our name out there so we can help those in need too! Or if you could pass this onto someone who you think it might interest that would be great too.
